Bridging the Digital Divide: Monroe’s Model for Equity and Access

In a recent editorial, nationally recognized education advocate and Howard University professor Dr. Ivory Toldson calls Monroe a model of what can happen when mayors think like CEOs of opportunity.

Dr. Toldson reflects on his 2022 visit to Monroe and the contrast he witnessed. Some students had access to fast and reliable internet on campus, while others sat in parking lots late at night, struggling to connect.

Mayor Friday Ellis recognized this disparity and decided to act. The result is a bold broadband expansion project in partnership with AT&T that will bring high speed, affordable fiber internet to more than 20,000 homes and businesses throughout the city. The rollout prioritizes underserved neighborhoods to ensure that those who need it most are connected first.

“Every fiber optic cable laid becomes a lifeline for families climbing toward prosperity,” Dr. Toldson writes.

“Mayor Ellis did not just expand broadband in Monroe. He expanded possibilities.”
We invite you to read this powerful piece about how Monroe is leading with purpose, putting people first, and setting a new standard for digital equity in America.
